About me

Amit Sharma

This is the place where I am supposed to tell a bit about me, so here goes.

My name is Amit Sharma (sometimes I use an alias ‘Scorpio’ in this blog) and I live in Bhopal, capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Despite being one of the larger cities of this state, Bhopal is still a relatively quiet town and its still possible here to know what Mrs. Tyagi, down the street, cooked for dinner last night. People are generally friendly and are not rushed (usually) all the time like in the bigger metros. Its not a great place for business as such but the local government is trying really hard to get some of the bigger players to invest more in Bhopal.

My primary occupation is in the printing industry; mainly in concept development, content writing, graphics and design. Sometimes I have to look after a few marketing aspects in my job as well but that is only when I have to, otherwise I delegate the work to others.

I have two adorable small daughters and if I miss a few posts, chances are that I am doing something important with them instead. I’m usually not given a choice about how much time I get to spend with them. They decide how much time they want to spend with me and I just comply, always happily. My wife is a beautiful, intelligent, loving, best-thing-that’s-ever-happened-to-me, home-maker… (and usually edits my profile). She has a doctorate in English Linguistics and is currently working as the Head of the Department of English Literature at a college affiliated to Barkatullah University.

I thought that since I actually enjoy writing, a blog would be pretty easy. I’ve seen people post 1000+ words on their blogs every day. I’m still trying to figure out how to steal half an hour of silence every other day to write a few lines. It’s a losing battle. Its certainly not as easy as I originally thought. My best bet is while the younger one naps and the elder one finishes her homework.

I love reading and attempting to write. I love the English language and usually read or write in it almost exclusively though it is not my native tongue.

My favorite authors: Robert Heinlein, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Anne McCaffery, Larry Niven, Hermann Hesse, Kurt Vonnegut… the list is pretty long.

Favorite books: Stranger in a strange land – Robert Heinlein, The Stand – Stephen King… I could go on forever.

My preferred music varies from classical to hard rock, from Jazz to sonatas, but no rap. The Who, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton figure somewhere on the top. I guess it depends on my mood at the time. Same with my choice of movies though I usually prefer the productions from 1940-1950 and 1970-1980. The common themes during these times agree more with my own tastes. And I love old black & white movies, especially Humphrey Bogart playing cops and robbers.
