I am somewhat of a fan of conspiracy reading material. The kind highlighting interstellar aliens living among us and acquiring many of the highest seats of power throughout the world. I read quite a bit of it and if nothing else, it’s a great way to pass the time without involving my brain. Most of it is freely available on the net, often the newsletters are dispatched regularly should the writers ever get hold of a interested person’s mail ID. A lot of it involves human shaped reptilian creatures with a sort of telepathic ability to influence our supposedly weaker minds. Almost like the original lore of vampires.
I don’t dismiss it. I don’t dismiss anything. In a universe as grand as ours, anything is possible, no matter how unlikely. But I do draw clear boundaries between facts and fiction. And as fiction, conspiracy theory isn’t too bad considering the sheer number of writers totally convinced that aliens live amongst us. Only human beings can be arrogant enough to seriously believe that if aliens do exist then they must have the same abstract notions of right and wrong, pain and pleasure as we ourselves do.
Though I have no personal experience regarding this, I don’t think that notions like justice and truth are universal. They are meant only for us and their main purpose is to elevate our own existence to undeserved heights. A fake glory. To paraphrase a great writer, Norman Mailer, if pain was fundament, then a blade of grass would feel all there is the moment it is cut. I don’t think it is fundament otherwise it would be genocide every time I mowed the lawn.
But I have to be honest and I do admire those who can seriously believe all this because it would be a wonderful and often much needed break from reality. A natural high, a purpose greater than the sum of mankind.
From my own point of view, aliens must exist. The universe is too big for them not to. But I don’t think they would really be interested in abducting anyone from here. Our technology is accidental and pretty recent. There is no way any alien civilization would be marginally or even significantly greater than us. Most likely they would be several orders of evolutionary cycles above us or below us. Either pure consciousness or harmless amino acids laying at the bottom of an alien ocean. The time scale of our universe is so great that its unlikely that two different organic accidents would happen around the same time and space.
So if there are aliens here, then they are purely terrestrially bred. And in that case they are not aliens regardless of whether they are like us or evolved in a subterranean environment – as claimed by some. And its unlikely, however great the justification for their actions, that they are occupying the major seats of power around the world. Money, power, popularity – these are purely human catalysts for greater achievement and I don’t think non-humans would really appreciate them as we do. We are pretty self-centered as a species and they would gain nothing by ruling us as one of us. So unless we were purely food for them, there would be no point in working hard enough to get there. And there are much easier ways to get the food than to rule countries and corporations.
